Introduction Post

 Introduction Post

  • What is your major? What is the coolest thing about your major?
    • I am a Music Performance major, and the coolest part about my major is that I get to train to play in professional ensembles while developing my musicianship.
  • What was the best class you took last semester? Why?
    • The best class that I took last semester was Advanced Orchestration. It was a fun class because we got to analyze a few major works and understand why they work so well for orchestra.
  • What were your biggest accomplishments last semester?
    • Between my senior capstone and honors research, I wrote about 60 pages and worked up two famous concertos.
  • Favorite books, movies, TV shows — Best movie you saw recently? Best book you read?
    • My favorite TV shows are Bojack Horseman, Avatar: the Last Airbender, and the Legend of Korra. The best movie I saw recently was Bandersnatch and the best book I recently read is Dragon Rider.
  • Favorite music — you might even even embed a music video if you want!
    • this one is hard to answer as an aspiring musician because I am constantly finding new music that I just fall in love with. However, I have had the March from Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphosis stuck in my head for the past 2 weeks, so I'll link a video here.
  • Career goals: short-term, long-term, practical goals, big dream goals
    • Short-term: apply and get into a good graduate program for a masters degree
    • Long-term: apply and get into a good graduate program for a doctorate degree
    • Practical goal: keep enjoying music and the process of making it
    • Big dream goals: win a professional orchestral job and teach as a university professor
  • Pets... and pictures of pets!
    • I have the neediest and cutest cat named Tux. I'll attach an image below.
  • You could say something about your favorite place(s), and link to that post
    • My favorite place to go is Laramie, WY. A lot of my family is from here, so lots of good memories from road trips up North. Link to blog here.
  • Favorite foods ... least favorite foods ... favorite thing to cook from scratch
    • My favorite food is pretty much anything Mexican, but especially burritos, quesadillas, and nachos. My least favorite food is pizza. My favorite thing to cook from scratch is crepes! A very versatile dish that pairs well with a lot of things.
  • Hobbies... plus hobbies you would like to try if you had time
    • I currently play video games and I do work with electronic music for my hobbies. If I had time, I'd love to get back into hiking, camping, and outdoorsy stuff like that.
  • if you had an extra day for fun, how would you spend it?
    • If I had an extra day for fun, I'd probably spend it exercising and then playing video games.

  1. Oh wow, I am so excited to meet a music performance major in class this semester, Chris! Are you interested in learning about Indian music in this class? As you can guess, music is a huge part of the Indian storytelling tradition, both in terms of stories told through music (and dance), and also the way that music itself is a theme in the stories, with gods and goddesses, heroines and heroes who are musicians!
And look at your adorable Tux: oh! Tuxedo cats are the cutest. I've had two Tuxedo cats: one with a white nose like your Tux, and one with a black nose (he was pretty funny-looking); if you scrolled down the Image Info page, you saw a picture of our Ralphie there: link.
Anyway, I hope this class can be a chance to learn about Indian music... my favorite Indian music group is Maati Baani; they do all kinds of great fusion experiments. Here's their YouTube if you are curious: Maati Baani - link

  2. Hi Chris!

I have never heard of your major before but I am super intrigued and think it is so cool. What instruments can you play and what is your favorite song to play on it?

It's so weird that you mentioned loving the movie Bandersnatch because I've been considering giving it a watch here recently so I think you've just convinced me to go ahead and watch it.

Is Laramie anywhere near Casper? If so, I'd be interested to hear about what it's like up there because I really enjoyed my trips to Casper, Wyoming which is where my parents used to live.

Finally, what's your favorite video game to play?

    Have a great day Chris!

  3. Hi Chris,
Your major is incredible!! I am a Neurobiosciences and Human Behavior major, so music is completely foreign and therefore very interesting to me! I am also a senior in the Honors College, and I am currently writing my Honors Research paper and completing the Colloquium, so the fact that you wrote sixty pages and worked up two famous concertos, (I'm not even quite sure what that means, but it sounds impressive and fancy in itself), is amazing. Great job!

  4. Hey Chris!
I love music, but I am terrible at it. I really liked that you did your introduction in bullet list form because intro's can be so hard. I am terrible at writing about myself, I cannot "sell" myself to save my life, so I appreciate that you sort of just followed the format and checked all of the boxes. I also think that it is super cool that you want to be a professional orchestral director or a professor, I think that is soo interesting. I really do not know anyone in your line of work so this is super interesting to me.

  5. Hey Chris,
That's amazing that you're a music major, a lot of work and dedication goes into music so I applaud that you decided to develop your musicianship. I really enjoyed Avatar and the Legend of Korra those are both very good shows. Me and you also share a few favorite foods as I really love mexican food and pizza. I see you spend and extra day of fun playing video games, what's your favorite video game ?

  6. Hi Chris! That is so impressive that you are a music major. I have not many music performance majors and that is cool that you have the passion to produce graduate degrees in this area of study. I also love Mexican food, especially just enjoying tacos. A restaurant in particular I like is food truck called Taco Loco. I highly recommend. Good luck this semester!

  7. Hey Chris! I think the way you are following your passion is really cool. I think if someone can line up their major with their passion, then they are on the right track to true success. I do not listen to much music anymore, but I still have a deep appreciation for the artform. Avatar the Last Airbender is actually one of my favorite shows of all time, and the original soundtrack in that show is phenomenal. I am sure you would agree. :). Good luck on following your passion!

  8. Chris, I'm so interested in your musical talents because I love music and performance! You are the only person I have met that is majoring in music performance and I think it's awesome that you're so driven. Personally, I'm far from being musically gifted, but props to you. My favorite Mexican food in Norman is Ted's, mainly because they serve copious amounts of food, but they also have 10/10 fajitas, which is a compliment coming from a tex-mex snob from Dallas. I'm looking forward to keeping up with your posts this semester!

  9. Hey Chris!

I am so glad you are a music major! Growing up, I learned how to play the violin, but I dropped it in high school for athletics. I also wasn't the best at playing the instrument, but A+ for effort, right? Advanced Orchestration sounds interesting, I am glad that you enjoyed it and chose it as your favorite class! I personally feel like Music Majors enjoy their major. They enjoy wanting to learn how to read, compose, or perform music! Orchestra (or any music genre really) definitely takes some talent, so it's awesome seeing someone do it!

  10. Hi Chris,
That's so cool that you decided to be a music performance major. I've always wish I would've learned how to play an instrument or even be musically talented. Music is something that is apart of my everyday life and it brings me happiness and joy. I love Mexican food, it's my favorite food ever and I'm not sure if I could live without it. I hope you achieve all goals you have set in your life and goodluck with this class!!

  11. Hi Chris,
Your cat is so beautiful! And musical performance sounds like a blast! I tried singing in choir at OU my first semester of college, and I had a lot of fun with it. What instruments do you play? I also love Mexican food. We went to Mexico a few years ago, and the food was really amazing. I can imagine why you might not like pizza; I get pretty sick of it if I eat it too often! Hope you are doing well!

  12. Hi Chris,
I just read your week five story, it was great! Also, it’s SO great that you are a Music Performance Major! I wanted to do something along those lines with voice, but unfortunately I was talked out of it. I am under the impression that you are a senior, if so, congrats! This year is a little weird with the whole pandemic, but still really special. Do you have a preference of school when it comes to getting your Master’s degree? I have a few friends who have looked for a long time and still haven’t found a school they really want to go to! Good luck!

  13. Hi Chris! It's super cool that you are a music performance major. It sounds like that is something you are really passionate about and that is so exciting that you already know exactly what your life's goals are! I've never been to Wyoming but I've heard that it is a beautiful place and I would love to visit someday. Mexican food is also my very favorite food of all time from burritos, to tacos, and nachos, and dishes topped with queso! I do find it interesting that you don't like pizza though.. that is such a universally liked food! I can't wait to read some of your stories throughout the semester!

  14. Chris,

I didn't know that there was a music performance major at the university. It definitely sounds like a major for someone dedicated to playing instruments. It's nice to see someone pursue a major that they are passionate in. I know a lot of my friends who were avid band students in high school went into a major that they didn't enjoy.

  15. Hi Chris,
That is awesome that you are a performance major, my dad was always into performing music. You have big school plans ahead of you and that is awesome to continue to want to get educated. I hope you have a great semester and I am looking forward to enjoying reading the rest of your stories.

  16. Hi Chris,
Music seem like an awesome field to in. I wonder what your favorite instrument is? My favorite part of sports events are watching and listening to the bands performances. I don't think I could ever stand school long enough to get a doctorate, but I aim to get a master's soon. I also play video games and love Mexican food. Also, cute cat!

  17. Hi Chris! That is so impressive that you are a music major! I love music , and took piano and vocal lessons for a long time, but I never really quite excelled at it. I love that you are pursuing something you are so passionate about, and that you know exactly what you want! Your cat is absolutely adorable! I have a cat as well, her name is Calypso!

  18. Hi Chris,
Your cat is really cute! It's really cool that you are planning to become a professional musician! I play an instrument but I don't know a lot about music theory, and I've always really admired people who know a lot about music in an intellectual/academic way. It's something I hope to learn more about one day!
It is wild that you don't like pizza.

  19. Hi Chris,
The Type A student in me really appreciates the way you laid out your introduction post! Haha. I also did an Honors Research course, I just finished it, and it is a LOT of work, but it's so worth it! Congratulations on finishing! I am a science brain, but my good friend is a music performance major, so I cannot imagine how busy you were that semester. I'm sure you learned lots of time management skills!
Good luck in the rest of the semester!
    Sincerely,
    Rachel

  20. Hello Chris,
First of all, I would just like to send my admiration to Tux. Tux is very very gorgeous, and the cutest indeed! Please tell Tux hello, and give Tux much love. Thank you for the picture.
If you can't tell, I am a cat lover. I have three myself.
    Your major sounds really interesting!
On your favorite books, movies, tv shows: I love Avatar. That show is just, the best. Like so good. Definitely one of the best things I've ever seen. I haven't actually seen Korra, but I know I need to and I have been told I will enjoy it. Maybe after I graduate! And about Dragon Rider, I wonder if that is by Cornelia Funke? If so that is childhood favorite of mine. In general books about dragons are enjoyable. I am currently reading the Priory of the Orange Tree, which is an adult fantasy novel about women and dragons and magic (I haven't gotten very far into it yet). My favorite dragon book/series is Eragon of course, despite it being kind of extremely similar to Lord of the Rings.
Good luck with the rest of your semester.

  21. Hey Chris! Great introduction post! I think it is awesome you are pursuing a degree and future in music! Its amazing that you also have written music as well! Also, your cat, Tux, is so stinking adorable! My brother and I are thinking of getting cats soon. We are thinking of Killua and Gon after the two characters who are best friends in an anime called Hunter X Hunter. If you have not checked it out I definitely recommend! I am also a Avatar the Last Airbender fan! Have you read any of the written stories? The story of zukos mom is interesting but I will not ruin it for you.

  22. Hi Chris! No wonder your stories were so good! You were a music performance major. There was a lot of creativity and style in your stories and it all kind of clicked together. As a big fan of video games as well, I really enjoyed that your stories resembled a video game series I've played before. Your cat is very adorable! My cat is very needy as well and she kind of baffles me sometimes, because she wants to leave the room one second then 10 seconds later, she wants to come back to the room. Anyways good luck on the rest of your semester.

  23. Hello Chris, I have not met a music major here at The University of Oklahoma yet, so nice to meet one. I really like how you set up your introduction post, it was organized and very easy to follow. Music is a good portion of this class, I am sure you can find inspiration in many pieces of music we have encountered in this class. I wish you all the best of luck in your future studies.

  24. Hello again Chris, Music is a part of everyone someway, somehow. I played the trumpet when I was little and enjoyed it a lot. It is really cool that you get to play with professors, who are extremely talented at what they do. You also get to grasp a more hands-on approach that other majors lack. I will hopefully see your name at the top someday.
